Did You Know You Can Visit Queen Elizabeth II’s Beloved Scottish Castle?

During my trip to Scotland, I finally checked off a major spot on my Bucket List—Balmoral Castle, Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite royal residence in Scotland.

Located in the heart of Aberdeenshire in the breathtaking Scottish Highlands, Balmoral Castle holds a special place in royal history and was notably where the Queen spent her final days in 2022.

We stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel and Balmoral Castle makes for a stunning day trip, blending majestic mountain scenery, picturesque rivers, and rich royal history. The most direct and scenic route covers roughly 90 miles and takes approximately 2.5 hours. You’ll journey along the A93, passing through the lush landscapes of Blairgowrie, Cairngorms National Park, Braemar, and Royal Deeside, areas known for their rolling hills, winding rivers, and serene forests.

This route, affectionately known as the Glenshee and Royal Deeside route, is widely considered one of Scotland’s most beautiful drives, offering numerous opportunities to stop and soak in the breathtaking Highland views.

Insider's Tip: Visiting Balmoral Castle

Balmoral Castle warmly opens its gates to visitors when the royal family isn’t staying there, typically from early April until early August. During this time, visitors can explore the meticulously maintained gardens, the expansive grounds, and exhibitions showcasing fascinating pieces of royal history.

Fun fact: Balmoral Castle has been the British Royal Family's Scottish holiday home since the 19th Century.

For those eager for an even more exclusive glimpse into royal life, Balmoral recently began offering extraordinary guided tours of the castle's interior—something that has only been available to the public since 2024! Visitors can now step inside King Charles’ private study, a rare opportunity to see where he works and reflects. Given the historic significance (the castle was completed in 1855), these tours are highly sought after. Be sure to book well in advance via the official Balmoral Castle website.
