Tights Talk: What to Buy, What to Avoid, and Why They’re Always Sold Out!
There’s something distinctly elegant about a well-chosen pair of tights. Whether you’re styling a bodysuit, layering under a skirt, or experimenting with tights and open-toe sandals (yes, it can be done), the right pair adds polish and sometimes even personality to your look. But finding that right pair? Not so simple.
Let’s break down how to shop for tights, what to look for, and a few of my go-to brands that actually hold up (literally and figuratively).
The Brown Tights Comeback
Yes, brown tights!!!!!! It is the “it” choice right now!
While black is the obvious choice (more on that below), chocolatey shades are trending and they’re surprisingly versatile, offering a softer contrast than black and a warm richness that elevates neutrals, camels, and even bold colors. Need proof?
The Calzedonia Invisible 20 Denier in Mocha is my current favorite. I also love The Essential Sheer Tights in Espresso from Commando.
The Basics: Black Tights
There’s no denying the power of black tights. They’re universally flattering, slimming, and offer endless pairings from evening dresses to off-duty streetwear.
From opaque to sheer to seamless, I’ve linked my favorite black pairs below:
What to Look For When Shopping for Tights
Before you add to cart (and wait for the site to restock... again), here’s what you don’t want:
Toe seams that show in open-toe shoes
Built-in short-like patterns that ruin a clean leg line
Instead, here’s your cheat sheet…
1. Sheer tights that work with sandals

Yes, fashion-forward and possible. Like these from Wolford. Notice there is no stitching at the toe part!
2. Seamless for those who love a bodysuit moment or shorter styles
I love these Invisible 20 Denier Sheer Tights (I wasn’t joking when I said they were my favorite!).
Also, if you’re ordering from Calzedonia, make sure you’re on a desktop! Their mobile site doesn’t process transactions properly!!!!! Took me months to discover this, I just thought the website was down.
3. Control top if you want extra support

These FALKE Shaping Top Tights are the BEST for shaping bellies and hips.
4. For body contouring

If you need a little extra shaping, the SKIMS Hoisery Shaping Tights are elite. These stockings are designed to snatch and contour at the tummy, thigh, AND back.
5. Booty-lifting!

Wearing something that requires a little extra booty lift? These from Mid-Sculpt Sheer Tights from Calzedonia are great. I love the SKIMS Butt-Shaping tights, but they are sold out! Sign up to be notified when they’re back in stock.
When to Wear What
A few quick seasonal suggestions to help rotate your tights drawer with your wardrobe:
Fall/Winter: Opaque rib-knit and control-top for warmth and polish.
Spring: Lighter sheer or patterned tights to keep things fresh.
Transitional: Pair tights with loafers and skirts for those in between days.
The Case for Patterned Tights
If you're going for that countryside-meets-catwalk aesthetic, opt for a subtle pattern, think micro-checks or ribbed textures, to add visual depth without overwhelming your look.
Patterns can also add structure when you’re styling flowy or oversized silhouettes.
These are my favorite: Calzedonia Ribbed Cashmere Blend Tights.
Sizing and Fit Tips
Tights sizing is not universal. A medium in one brand might feel like a small or a large in another.
When in doubt: size up. It’ll save you from rolled waistbands, uncomfortable seams, and surprise snags. I am pretty tall (almost 5'8") and I always wear size L! Size up!
Handling with Care (Literally)
Long nails? You must wear gloves when putting tights on. One snag and it’s over. It’s tragic how many of my pairs meet their end before you even leave the house!
Tights Crimes: A Few Style Missteps to Avoid
Thick tights with delicate shoes are too heavy
Super shiny tights in daylight (lighting matters)
Ignoring waistband construction (some roll down constantly, others don’t budge)
Tights can pull a whole look together, but they also require trial, error, and a little patience (especially when they’re always sold out). Still, once you find the right fit and texture, it’s game-changing.
Get a few pairs and just keep them in your drawer!
