Microblading 101

Kelsey Oenick, stylist for Monika Dixon Public Relations, tried out Microblading at GLAMD in River North.

Gone are the days of thin, unbrushed eyebrows.

Microblading, the latest brow perfecting treatment is performed using a hand-held tool and micro-needles grouped together that create fine incisions that manually deposit pigmentation into the upper layer of the skin - also known as cosmetic tattooing. For the second installment in our GLAMD series, our Stylist, Kelsey, tried out this sought after treatment at the cosmetic boutique.

Benefits to Microblading

  • Less painful than other brow shaping methods (numbing gel used!)

  • Follows the natural direction of the hair growth

  • Results last twelve to eighteen months

  • Specialized pigment  formulated for the skin that gets lighter through the exfoliation of the skin

Measurements and guidelines are mapped out on your brows to ensure precision and outline where the pigment will be applied. Kelly Letto, the microblading esthetician at GLAMD walked us through properly proportioning your brows to your face shape and how to achieve natural symmetry. No one's face is perfectly symmetrical so a measuring technique show us a guide of where our brows should be in order to make them appear as symmetrical as possible (brows are sisters, not twins!)

The pigment color is then formulated based on your dominant skin hue and undertones. The pigment color combined with your skin’s undertone determine the final result that match as close as possible to your natural brow color.

The treatment takes about 90-120 minutes from start to finish. The pre-drawing is filled in according to the natural direction of hair growth until both brows appear full and symmetrical. A touch up treatment is done 4-6 weeks after the original treatment in order to deepen the color and touch up any areas that need to be adjusted. The best part about this treatment is that it lasts for so long. No more constant month-to-month up keep of your brows!
